Born in Yorkshire, he spent his early years at school in Hanover and Rome. In 1921 he studied at the Royal Institute of Fine Arts in Rome, he was awarded the title of Professor of architectural design in 1924. After travelling Italy and Egypt he returned to England in 1925. During the following 6 years he studied Oriental Art and Chinese Calligraphy at the Courtauld Institute, exhibited drawings and watercolours at Paterson's Gallery New Bond St London, studied and obtained LRIBA at Architectural College and then worked as an architect for his godfather, Sir Herbert Baker ARA FRIBA. After this he decided to become a professional artist. He Exhibited and was an elected member of Society of Graphic Artists and the British Watercolour Society. In 1936 he travelled all over China and the Gobbi Desert Mongolia, painting and sketching, He left Shanghai August 1937 at the start of the Sino/Japanese war. 1938 Exhibited at the Fine Art Society Gallery, London. 1945 Exhibited at The Gallery above Selfridges, this being his 3rd one-man exhibition. 1948 moved to Cornwall to paint. He taught, lectured and exhibited all over Cornwall and was later made life member of St Ives Society of Artists. He used various mediums in his work, Watercolours were his forte with delicacy and depth . Oils painted with brush and knife, Egg Tempra, Pen and Ink drawings, Etchings, Aquatints, and Zinc block printing. Having travelled europe and asia at a time when few ventured far, his paintings captured a unique aspect of times gone by.
